It might sound silly, but your morning moisturizer can make or break your day. It needs to hydrate without feeling heavy, work well under makeup and sunscreen (we've all had some patchy problems), and give you that fresh, glowing look. I've tested dozens of daytime moisturizers, and these 5 are my absolute favorites. Whether you're looking for a budget-friendly option under $10, a lightweight gel for oily skin, or a brightening cream packed with Vitamin C, there's something here for everyone.
1. Medicube Capsule Cream with Deep Vitamin C - $19.90
This is actually my current morning moisturizer that I have on right now, and I am loving it. The Medicube Deep Vitamin C Capsule Cream has a very fun texture as it's a clear gel filled with yellow Vitamin C capsules. It's packed with Sea Buckthorn Extract, Niacinamide and pure Vitamin C to brighten, hydrate and improve skin radiance. The moisturizer comes in a pot with a little spatula, so I use the spatula to take out some gel and one capsule a day and put it on the back of my hand. I then take my finger and evenly spread the product around my face and down my neck.
Key ingredients:
- Liposome Vitamin C: Stabilized Vitamin C encapsulated in liposomes for deeper penetration and maximum effectiveness without oxidation.
- Sea Buckthorn Extract: Rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants, brightens and evens skin tone.
- Niacinamide: Reduces hyperpigmentation, strengthens skin barrier and refines pores.
Why I love it:
The gel texture absorbs almost instantly without any greasy residue, making it perfect under makeup and sunscreen. I've noticed my skin looks brighter and more radiant since using this every morning, and it sits well with all my other products. I don't need to wait long for it to soak in before going in with sunscreen and make up.
Best for:
- Dull or uneven skin tone
- Hyperpigmentation or dark spots
- Normal to oily skin
What I'd change:
The scent is a little strong with a distinct Vitamin C citrus-y smell that's not unpleasant but it's noticeable for a while after you apply. So I wish the scent was a little more toned down but it's definitely not stopping me from using it.
2. BIOSSANCE Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Moisturizer - $56
If you're looking for a luxury, lightweight moisturizer that's perfect for more warmer months, you've found it. The BIOSSANE Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Moisturizer is an antioxidant formula with squalane, vitamin C and fermented lemon peel. It's super light and absorbs really quickly with no heaviness. It hydrates your skin really well, evens skin tone and any dark sports, smooths fine lines and helps to protect your skin for the day. It's definitely more of a luxury option
Key ingredients:
- Squalane: A plant-derived oil that mimics your skin's natural sebum, deeply hydrating without clogging pores.
- Vitamin C (10%): Brightens, evens tone, and boosts collagen production for firmer-looking skin.
- Fermented Lemon Peel: Packed with antioxidants to defend against free radicals and pollution.
- White Shiitake Mushroom: Helps reduce discoloration and improve skin clarity.
Why I love it:
This is one of my favourites when the weather warms up. It's really light and breathable so it's great for hot and humid days. Despite being lightweight, it's super hydrating and leaves my skin looking radiant and more plump. It's definitely more of a luxury option so I don't use this every day, but I treat myself on days when I have an event or something special.
Best for:
- Normal to oily skin
- Dull skin
What I'd change:
The price tag is a little high, so this one is definitely more of a splurge. So the only thing I'd change is I wish the pot was bigger!
3. Paula's Choice CLEAR Oil-Free Moisturizer - $39
If you have blemishes or acne-prone skin, this moisturiser is a great option. This moisturizer is formulated for blemish-prone skin because it's really light, it won't clog your pores and cause breakouts. It contains niacinamide to minimize your pores and reduce flakiness, hyaluronicd acid for hydration and soothing antioxidants to help calm any redness.
Key ingredients:
- Niacinamide: Minimizes pores, reduces redness, and strengthens the skin barrier.
- Hyaluronic Acid: Locks in moisture without adding oil or shine.
- Ceramides: Support the skin barrier and prevent moisture loss.
- Antioxidants (Vitamin E, Green Tea): Calm irritation and protect against environmental damage.
Why I love it:
It's incredibly light, one of the most light and water-like moisturizers I've tried, but it does deliver a lot of hydration without shine. My skin feels soft and I've noticed my pores look smaller. I love that it's fragrance free so it works well for sensitive or skin with more blemishes.
Best for:
- Acne-prone skin
- Oily or combination skin
What I'd change:
This is genuinely a great moisturizer for acne-prone skin which is fantastic, but that's not what I'm looking for at the moment. When I feel oily and like I'm breaking out, this is a great option for me. But right now, my skin's in need of something a little more rich.
4. e.l.f. SKIN Holy Hydration! Daily Moisturizer - $9
This is an amazing budget-friendly option that actually works. The e.l.f. Holy Hydration! Daily Moisturizer is a creamy but lightweight formula that absorbs easily and nourishes your skin. It's infused with aloe to soothe your skin, jojoba oil and shea butter to hydrate it, vitamin E to soften your skin and grapeseed oil to help even out your skin tone. For under $10, it genuinely competes with moisturizers that cost 4 times as much.
Key ingredients:
- Aloe Vera: Soothes and calms irritated or sensitive skin.
- Jojoba Oil & Shea Butter: Deeply hydrate and soften skin.
- Vitamin E: Antioxidant that protects and softens skin.
- Grapeseed Oil: Evens skin tone and provides lightweight moisture.
Why I love it:
Even though it's only $9, I feel like it really leaves my skin feeling soft and nourished. I keep one in my gym bag for quick post-workout hydration because I love that it's packed with antioxidants and hydrating ingredients.
Best for:
While it's great for normal to dry skin, people with very oily skin might find it slightly too rich. And because it's so affordable, some people might be skeptical about its effectiveness, but it does work.
5. Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream - $33.85
I absolutely loved this moisturizer when I tried it for the first time and I went to try to repurchase it and it was sold out! But it's back in stock, so I will be stocking up in case that happens again. The Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream is a luxurious moisturizer with a nice, firm texture that delivers long-lasting hydration all day long. It's formulated with 2% niacinamide and 2% squalane to maintain your skin's oil-moisture balance, making it great for combination or dry skin.
Key ingredients:
- Niacinamide: Brightens, evens tone, and strengthens the skin barrier.
- Squalane: Mimics your skin's natural oils, deeply hydrating without clogging pores.
- Rice Bran Water: Rich in antioxidants and vitamins, nourishes and softens skin.
- Ginseng Water: Revitalizes and energizes dull, tired skin.
Why I love it:
It sits really well under make up which is really important for me but also gives such a luminous, dewey finish that Korean Beauty products are famous for. It hydrates, it's got great ingredients and I feel like it gives me a radiant, healthy look.
Best for:
- Dry or combination skin
- Mature skin or skin with early signs of ageing
What I'd change:
It's a little pricey sitting at $33.85, but there is a smaller size that's priced at $18 which is great if you want to try it out to see if you like it. The 100ml is in a bottle and the 50ml is in a pot. I personally prefer a bottle for my products but that's just me!
Total Cost Breakdown:
Budget Option: $9 (e.l.f.)
Mid-Range Favorites: $18-39 (Medicube, Paula's Choice, Beauty of Joseon 50ml)
Splurge: $56 (BIOSSANCE)
Keep a lightweight option for summer (BIOSSANCE or Paula's Choice) and a richer one for winter (Beauty of Joseon or Medicube). Stock up on e.l.f. as your budget-friendly backup.
No matter your budget or skin type, there's a morning moisturizer here that will leave you glowing, hydrated, and ready to take on the day. The key is finding the right texture and ingredients for your skin's unique needs.
